Principal's Message

H. & M. Potter School Family,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the H. & M. Potter School for the 2016-2017 school year!  We are currently home to over 550 students in preschool through fourth grade. In addition to multiple sections of grades K-4, we reach our youngest learners with one half day and two full day preschool classes.

Our main goal is to provide each individual child with the tools needed for success in a caring and nurturing environment. H. & M. Potter School offers a variety of programs including basic skills, ALPS and special education classes to meet the needs of all learners. Our guidance counselor, nurse, child study team members and related service providers are all on hand to contribute to our students’ success.

At H. & M. Potter School we pride ourselves on infusing technology throughout the curriculum to ensure that our students are learning relevant skills for the digital age. Each classroom is equipped with a projector, Apple TV, wireless internet and a document camera. In grades two through four students are 1:1 with Chromebooks so that each child has their own Chromebook for class use during the school day. Our learners in preschool through first grade have access to Chromebooks, iPad carts and computer labs. Teachers utilize Google Apps for Education, and this year we will be incorporating Compass Learning to provide individualized instruction.

Throughout the year we implement opportunities for our students to explore. In October we participate in the Global Cardboard Challenge which brings students and families together to problem solve and create. Each December our students participate in The Hour of Code to promote computer science. This year we will be exploring additional opportunities to engage students in real-world problem solving.

The H. & M. Potter School also offers a wide variety of clubs and activities. Each year our drama club puts on a musical, and this year we are looking forward to watching our actors take the stage in Disney’s Cinderella Kids. Our students learn about democracy through our Student Council in which third and fourth grade representatives engage in fundraising activities, school-wide events and volunteer opportunities. Each spring an election, complete with campaign speeches and posters, is held to choose the new representatives. This year we will expand upon our relationship with the Berkeley Branch of the Ocean County Library to continue our Book Club which promotes the fun of reading.

The H. & M. Potter School is fortunate to have a very active and supportive PTA. Their dedication allows us to do so much for our students throughout the year. In 2016 we won third place in the country in the Dream Machine Recycle Rally competition winning $15,000 for green improvements in our school. Please visit our PTA page for information about our events, fundraisers and meeting dates. Our meetings are held monthly in the All Purpose Room, all are welcome!

Communication between parents and the school is essential. We encourage you to communicate with your child’s teacher through email, voicemail or via the student planner. The student planner offers a variety of information about our school and district along with a space to communicate with the teacher.

We love connecting with you on social media. Please follow our district Facebook page along with our school Twitter and Instagram accounts @berkeleypotter to see our daily updates. For safety reasons, when commenting please refrain from using student names or identifying information. Our monthly newsletter will be available on our website and will highlight information about upcoming events.

Having both grown up in Berkeley Township, our Assistant Principal Mr. Waldron and I know what a wonderful community this is and how lucky we are to have the privilege to work with your family each and every day. The entire staff of the H. & M. Potter School welcomes you and is invested in your child’s success. It is my sincere hope that your family loves H. & M. Potter School as much as we do!  My door is always open, please feel free to contact me with any questions, or simply to introduce yourself. Have a fantastic school year!

Sincerely,

Andrea Cimino, Principal
